Asparaginase Erwinia chrysanthemi (Erwinaze)

Class/mechanism: Depletes plasma asparagine by catalyzing the deamidation of asparagine to aspartic acid and ammonia, selectively killing leukemic cells which are unable to synthesize asparagine due to a lack of asparagine synthetase.

History of changes in FDA indication

• 11/18/2011: Initial FDA approval "as a component of a multi-agent chemotherapeutic regimen for the treatment of patients with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) who have developed hypersensitivity to E. coli-derived asparaginase.
