Sanjay Mishra, MS, PhD is a Research Associate of Medicine at Brown University; and a Research Program Manager at the Lifespan Cancer Institute. He is also the study coordinator of the COVID-19 and Cancer Consortium (CCC19). CCC19 is a consortium of over 120 cancer centers and other organizations across North America, who came together in March 2022 to collect data about patients with cancer who have been diagnosed with COVID-19. Sanjay transitioned from Vanderbilt University Medical Center in September 2022 to Lifespan Cancer Center as the coordinator of the Center for Clinical Cancer Informatics and Data Science (CCIDS). His primary interest in data science is to understand the health care outcomes, disparities, hurdles on data access and data ethics. Previously, as a postdoctoral fellow in Vanderbilt Vaccine Center, Sanjay worked on developing vaccine candidates against Zika and Dengue. He got his Ph.D. from Vanderbilt University in Chemical and Physical Biology, studying small heat shock proteins (sHSPs) for their role in the stress response and aging. Using protein engineering and CRISPR knockout strategies, his research on conserved roles for sHSPs among vertebrates, has shown that sHSPs have possibly evolved under the organellar and organismic proteostatic demands to protect against disease development and prevention of the aggregation of misfolded proteins. Sanjay's research has also involved protein transporters, and vacuolar transport mechanisms. Sanjay frequently writes on popular science topics and his writings have been cumulatively read over 10 million times.
