The Gail model Breast Cancer Risk Assessment Tool takes into account the following risk factors:

  • Current age (Gail model only calculates risk for women at least 35 years old)
  • Age at menarche; that is, the age at the time of the first period
  • Age at first live birth or whether the patient has never had children
  • Number of first-degree relatives (mother, sisters, daughters) with breast cancer
  • Number of previous benign breast biopsies
  • Atypical hyperplasia in a previous breast biopsy
  • Race/ethnicity
