Daunorubicin liposomal (DaunoXome)

Also known as daunorubicin citrate liposome injection.

General information

Class/mechanism: Anthracycline enclosed in a liposomal preparation, which protects it from chemical and enzymatic degradation, reduces protein binding, and decreases uptake by normal (non-reticuloendothelial system) tissues. Liposomal preparation may increase accumulation in tumors. Daunorubicin binds and intercalates between DNA base pairs. Inhibits topoisomerase II activity by stabilizing the DNA-topoisomerase II complex, resulting in single and double strand DNA breaks. May also inhibit polymerase activity and trigger free radical damage to DNA.
