Travel award

Due to a generous grant from Vanderbilt University, we are able to offer a small number of travel awards to qualified applicants. We intend to support one to two $500 travel awards for each of the following conferences:

• AMIA 2019 Annual Symposium in Washington, DC (Nov 16-20, 2019)
• 61st ASH Annual Meeting & Exposition in Orlando, FL (Dec 7-10, 2019)
• ASCO Annual Meeting in Chicago, IL (May 29 – June 2, 2020)

The intent of these travel awards is to support trainees (medical, nursing, pharmacy, etc.) to defray some of the costs of attending these professional society meetings. Strong preference will be given to applicants with work accepted to the conference of interest (e.g., a poster), although this is not a requirement. We are particularly interested in supporting work that utilizes new media, such as collaborative wikis, and measures the impact of such interventions on the hematology/oncology community. Given the lack of diversity in the field of hematology/oncology, preference will also be given to women, minority, and international applicants.

Application instructions

In order to apply, a trainee must provide an application package containing:

1. A biosketch in NIH format
2. A letter of support from their program director, confirming that they are in good standing and eligible to apply.
3. An application limited to 2 pages

Applications will be scored using the standard NIH approach, by:

1. Significance
2. Investigator
3. Innovation
4. Approach
5. Environment

All applications will be judged independently by at least two reviewers, and all applicants will be provided with a short written critique. If the applicant is selected for an award, they will receive a $500 check from HemOnc.org LLC. No taxes will be withheld and it is the responsibility of the applicant to report this as gift income as required by their municipality. Anyone is allowed to apply, unless they appear on the United States Specially Designated Nationals And Blocked Persons List.

Completed applications should be submitted as a PDF document to [email protected]. Incomplete applications, applications in format other than PDF, and applications exceeding the page limit will be rejected without review.

Application deadlines

So that we can give your application full consideration, the following deadlines will be strictly enforced (2 months prior to each conference):

• AMIA 2019: September 16, 2019
• ASH 2019: October 7, 2019
• ASCO 2020: March 29, 2020
